ARTIST STATEMENT

My greatest inspiration is nature and the people who interact with it. I am fascinated by portraiture and the relationships it forms with each viewer. So much can be read and empathized within a portrait; each reveals unique emotions, narrative, and personality.

My favorite tool to use is my hand. I love immersing myself in different mediums and having the evidence imbedded in the creases of my hand. I am intrigued by the surface of wood: the rough and unpredictable feeling and how charcoal plays with every ridge. The character and life that wood offers in my artistic process captivates me.

Wood has an honest history. The mediums and processes I am most inspired by originate from trees. I have recently begun to honor the metamorphic characteristcs that trees share by making my own charcoal with wood from my family's home. My art originates with this existential experience of exploring what has been provided to me. I create art because I was given this gift to be used and shared.

My artistic process merges the narrative of wood; reflecting the harmony of drawing from nature, with nature.
